Tasting note

Drinking Window

Etna Bianco
Green-tinged straw-yellow. Minerals and minty herbs complement stone fruits, spiced pear and flowers on the nose. Then rich and round on the palate, with lively, harmonious acidity framing and lifting the pear and apple flavors. Finishes bright and long. Lovely wine but much less minerally and more pineappley than I would normally expect from an Etna Bianco
LAPILLIBIANCO Lapilli Bianco 2014

Bright straw. Clean, fresh, floral aromas of apple and pear show minty lift. Soft and easygoing in the mouth, conveying a supple texture and modest intensity to its orchard fruit and saline flavors. Finishes with limited grip and decent persistence.

LAPILLIROSSO Lapilli Rosso 2013

Medium red. Musky blackcurrant, dark cherry, mocha and herbs on the nose. Still currently a bit youthfully clenched on the palate, but the bright red and dark berry fruit flavors show good intensity and precision. Finishes with building sweetness and exuberant fruitiness. This wine benefited from aeration, so I’d open it an hour in advance of serving it.

TSM-ETNA-ROSSO Etna Rosso Tenuta San Michele 2013

Bright red. Archetypal Nerello Mascalese aromas of strawberry, orange peel, minerals and fresh herbs. Dense, juicy and strongly mineral, with bright red berry flavors lifted by harmonious acidity. Finishes clean and long, with a lingering, crystalline mineral quality. This is better than any other red wine made by Murgo, and by a clear margin.

BRUT-MURGO Murgo Brut 2012

Pale yellow with a persistent mousse of small bubbles. Orchard  fruit and smoke aromas on the bright nose. Then fresh and juicy in the mouth, with lively stone fruit and floral flavors leavened by a rich, creamy, almost oily mouthfeel. The finish is bright and long

BRUT-ROSE-MURGO Murgo Brut Rosè 2011

Bright pink with a steady stream of medium-sized bubbles. Spicy puff pastry, strawberry jam and rhubarb on the nose. More strawberry-rhubarb on the palate, complemented by sweet spices and hints of smoke and ripe yellow. This rather weighty wine finishes moderately long and creamy, with a saline note

TSM-CABERNET Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Good full ruby. Inviting aromas of smoky dark berries, cedar and medicinal herbs. In the mouth, the bright plum, cassis andgraphite flavors show good acid cut and floral lift. Finishes with polished tannins and very good length. Smoother and more concentrated than the estate’s entry-level Cabernet Sauvignon bottling but ultimately not much more complex or interesting.

Murgo Extra Brut 2008

Bright yellow. Aromas of lime, diesel fuel and fennel on the crisp  nose. Dry, dense and juicy, displaying a penetrating quality to the stone fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes complex and long, with a lingering stony quality and noteworthy acidity and floral lift. One of the best, most complex bubblies I have ever had from Murgo.
